IKEA Canada Celebrates 50 Years of Furnishing Canadian Homes
IKEA Canada is marking 50 years in the Canadian market, five decades after opening its first store in Richmond, British Columbia, on Oct. 2, 1976.
The retailer has since expanded into a national network that includes 16 stores, 13 Plan and order points, three Customer Distribution Centres and one Distribution Centre, supported by more than 6,500 employees across Canada. IKEA Canada also recently opened a compact-format store in London, Ontario, the first location of its kind for the company in Canada.
To mark the anniversary, IKEA Canada is offering one iconic product at 50 per cent off every weekend in October. The first promotion, scheduled for Oct. 3 and 4, features the KALLAX shelving unit, with quantities limited to 500 units per day.
“For 50 years, IKEA Canada has been part of everyday life at home, from first apartments and growing families to new routines, new spaces and new ways of living,” said Selwyn Crittendon, CEO and chief sustainability officer of IKEA Canada.
Crittendon said the company remains focused on making functional home furnishings more affordable and accessible to Canadian consumers.
The anniversary comes as IKEA continues to adapt its Canadian retail model to changing shopping habits. In addition to traditional large-format stores, the company now operates smaller planning and ordering locations and is expanding into compact retail formats such as the new London store.
IKEA Canada said it has more than seven million IKEA Family members. In the previous year, the company reported 33.3 million visits to its Canadian stores and 199.9 million visits to IKEA.ca.
The retailer is also highlighting products that have remained part of its assortment and Canadian households over several decades, including BILLY bookcases, KALLAX shelving and POÄNG seating.
“The best IKEA products are practical, personal and clever. They are designed to fit into real homes and real lives,” said Meghan Willisko, head of home furnishing and retail design at IKEA Canada.
The 50th anniversary program also includes the company’s “You Give it Meaning” marketing campaign, which launched Sept. 14 and is scheduled to run until Nov. 8, 2026. IKEA Canada also hosted an anniversary event in Toronto on Sept. 25 featuring exhibits on the company’s history in Canada and products associated with the brand over the past five decades.
IKEA Canada is part of Ingka Group, which operates 574 IKEA stores in 31 countries. The Canadian operation traces its roots to the Richmond opening in 1976, when the company entered the market as a cash-and-carry home furnishing retailer.
