Canada Enacts Program to Welcome Immigrants with Skilled Trades Experience

The labour challenges in Canada are ongoing and the government is eagerly trying to combat this shortage with new initiatives. On May 31, the Government of Canada announced the launch of its first-ever, category-based selection program. The new program will allow the country’s government to issue invitations to immigrants to apply for residency if they have specific qualifications, training, and language abilities.

The program will focus on Express Entry Candidates invited to apply (ITAs) if they have strong French-language capabilities and experience in the skilled trades sector (ex: carpenters, cabinet makers, contractors), healthcare, engineering, transport, and agriculture. Canada’s Immigration Minister, Sean Fraser, believes that the program will help alleviate labour challenges in Canada and encourage more Canadians and newcomers to learn French.

“Everywhere I go, I’ve heard loud and clear from employers across the country who are experiencing chronic labour shortages. These changes to the Express Entry system will ensure that they have the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed,” said Fraser. “We can also grow our economy and help businesses with labour shortages while also increasing the number of French-proficient candidates to help ensure the vitality of French-speaking communities. Put simply, Canada’s immigration system has never been more responsive to the country’s social or economic needs.”

Understanding and Applying for Express Entry

The Express Entry program specifically caters to handling the country’s labour issues and successes. It specifically manages three immigration programs: Federal Skilled Workers Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class Program. Each program utilizes the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) to evaluate its candidates based on work experience, language, career, and education history. Immigrants with high CRS scores will be more likely to secure an ITA.

To apply for Express Entry, you must first create your Express Entry profile and include your language test results, educational credentials, and passport and travel documentation. After you apply, the Express Entry organization will determine whether your criteria meet the requirements and profile ranks high. If so, you will receive an ITA for permanent residence. After the ITA, send over your complete application that includes: reference letters, police report clearance, and medical examination results.

Category draws for the Express Entry will begin in the late summer of 2023. If your specific occupation is not included in the list, especially if you are in the skilled trades industry, you may still be considered for general draws which can be verified on the Express Entry site.
